Everything you need to know before getting started.
The Security+ SY0-701 exam has a maximum of 90 questions, with a mix of multiple-choice and performance-based questions (PBQs). You have 90 minutes to complete it.
You need a score of 750 on a scale of 100–900 to pass Security+ (SY0-701). CompTIA uses scaled scoring, so questions can be weighted differently.
CompTIA lists the U.S. retail price for Security+ (V7 / SY0-701) as $404 (noting this as of January 2025). Pricing can vary by region and discounts may be available through authorized channels.
SY0-701 covers five domains: General Security Concepts (12%), Threats, Vulnerabilities & Mitigations (22%), Security Architecture (18%), Security Operations (28%), and Security Program Management & Oversight (20%).
There are no mandatory prerequisites — anyone can register and take the exam. CompTIA commonly recommends Network+ (or equivalent knowledge) before Security+.
Security+ is commonly used for U.S. DoD-aligned roles, and CompTIA notes Security+ is required for many federal employees under DoD directive 8140 in its blog content. DoD role/credential mappings can change, so candidates should confirm against the current DoD qualification matrices.
Security+ is part of CompTIA’s Continuing Education (CE) program and follows a three-year renewal cycle. CompTIA lists CE fees totaling $150 over the three-year period for Security+ (fees can be paid anytime during the cycle). If you hold multiple CompTIA certs, you generally only pay CE fees for your highest-level cert and lower-level certs renew with it.
Security+ is generally considered intermediate (harder than A+ or Network+). Expect scenario-based questions and PBQs that test practical decision-making rather than memorization.
Your $425 (approx.) exam fee deserves the best preparation.
